About the Untitled Virtual Gallery

Untitled Virtual Gallery: An Art Installation Critiquing Capitalism and Empowering Artists

The Untitled Virtual Gallery is more than just a space to showcase art—it is a provocative art installation that challenges the structures of capitalism and reimagines how art can be created, shared, and valued. By blending cutting-edge XR technology with a deeply rooted socialist ethos, this gallery is both a critique of the current art market and a bold vision for a more equitable future.

The Concept: Art as a Critique of Capitalism

At its core, the Untitled Virtual Gallery is a statement piece that questions the commodification of art under capitalism. It exposes how the art market often prioritises profit over creativity, leaving many artists undervalued and unsupported.

  • No Fees, No Commission: By eliminating submission fees and taking 0% commission on sales on original pieces, the gallery rejects the exploitative practices of traditional art spaces.

  • Inclusivity Over Exclusivity: The gallery is accessible to anyone with a phone, tablet, PC, laptop, or VR headset, breaking down the barriers of elitism often associated with physical galleries.

  • Art for All: The gallery’s socialist agenda ensures that art remains a shared, communal experience rather than a luxury commodity.

  • We never take commission on original art sales, but we do partner with creators to offer affordable prints & merch in our shop. Every purchase splits profits 50/50 between the artist + gallery, so you’re supporting both with one click!

The Innovation: XR as a Tool for Change

The Untitled Virtual Gallery leverages Extended Reality (XR) to create an immersive, boundary-pushing experience that redefines what a gallery can be.

  • A Virtual Revolution: Unlike traditional galleries confined by physical walls, this virtual space exists everywhere and nowhere, accessible to a global audience.

  • Immersive Storytelling: Through XR, visitors don’t just view art—they step into it. The gallery becomes an interactive narrative, guiding users through a critique of capitalism while celebrating the power of collective creativity.

  • The Untitled Virtual Gallery stands out as one of the few galleries in the world capable of showcasing digital art in its truest form. Built on WebGL technology, the gallery offers a seamless, browser-based experience that doesn’t require downloads or specialised software. This innovative approach allows artists to display their digital creations—whether they’re 3D models, interactive installations, or animated pieces—in a way that feels immersive and authentic. Unlike traditional galleries, which are often limited to physical mediums, the Untitled Virtual Gallery embraces the limitless possibilities of digital art, providing a platform where pixels and polygons can shine just as brightly as paint and canvas. By leveraging the power of WebGL, the gallery not only bridges the gap between art and technology but also redefines what it means to experience art in the digital age.

The Impact: A Socialist Agenda for Artists

The Untitled Virtual Gallery is not just a critique—it’s a call to action. It embodies a socialist vision by:

  • Empowering Artists: Providing a platform for artists to showcase their work without financial barriers.

  • Building Community: Creating a space where artists and art lovers can connect, collaborate, and support one another.

  • Challenging Norms: Encouraging visitors to rethink the value of art and the systems that govern its distribution.

Why It Matters

In a world where art is often reduced to a commodity, the Untitled Virtual Gallery stands as a beacon of innovation and resistance. It is a living, evolving art piece that uses technology to challenge the status quo and imagine a future where creativity is valued above profit.

By merging art, technology, and activism, the gallery not only critiques capitalism but also demonstrates how XR can be a powerful tool for social change. It is a testament to the idea that art can—and should—be a force for good in the world.

Experience is More Important Than Gear When Doing Photography

When it comes to photography, there are two things that are essential: experience and gear. While gear can certainly help you take better photos, it is not the most important factor. In fact, experience is often more important than gear.

Here are a few reasons why experience is more important than gear when doing photography:

Experienced photographers know how to use their gear effectively. They know the settings on their cameras, how to use different lenses, and how to compose a shot. They also know how to use natural light and artificial light to create stunning images.

Recently, I did a favour for a young media professional who was starting out. He was having trouble getting a good headshot, and the light on location was terrible. I knew I could improve the photo dramatically with a 5-in-1 reflector that I happened to have with me.

this harsh light is not flattering

The young professional solution was considering buying expensive lights to overpower the sun, but I showed him how a simple, inexpensive reflector could solve the problem. As you can see in the second photo, the reflector bounced the sunlight back onto the subject's face, creating a more flattering and professional-looking headshot.

This is just one example of how experience can be more important than gear when it comes to photography. With a little knowledge and know-how, you can take great photos even with limited resources.

Experienced photographers know how to anticipate the moment. They know when to press the shutter button and how to capture the perfect moment. They also know how to work with their subjects to get the best possible shots.

Experienced photographers have a keen eye for detail. They notice things that others might miss, and they know how to use those details to create beautiful photos.

If you are serious about photography, it is important to invest in experience. Take classes, read books, and practice as much as you can. The more experience you have, the better your photos will be.

Here are some tips for hiring a photographer with experience:

Look for a photographer who has a strong portfolio. Their portfolio should show a variety of different subjects in their chosen specialty, don’t hire a generalist, and it should be clear that they are skilled in using their gear.

Ask about the photographer's experience. How long have they been doing photography? What types of photography do they specialize in? Have they worked with a client like you before they can show you?

Get references. Ask the photographer for references from past clients. This will give you an idea of their work ethic and their ability to deliver high-quality photos.

By following these tips, you can be sure to hire a photographer with the experience and skill to take stunning photos.

Mathieu Decodts Photography 2022 Recap and what is next

As a professional artist and photography teacher, 2022 was a year full of exciting opportunities and challenges. Here's a recap of some of the highlights of my year:

One of the biggest achievements of the year was being featured in Good Light Magazine, a professional photography magazine, three times. The first feature was in the spring, when I contributed an article about using cheap lights up close to exploit the inverse square law in portrait photography and make amazing work on the cheap. The article was well-received, and I was asked to contribute two more articles later in the year - the first one teaching how to use home automation assistants like google assistant and Amazon Alexa to help you run your portrait studio. The second one was on my love of Alphonse Mucha's work and how it imspired a scifi shoot with an amazing model.

In addition to writing for Good Light Magazine, I also had the opportunity to work with a wide range of creative clients on amazing shoots. One of my favorite projects was a collaboration with a local woman celebrating her birthday who asked me to photograph her in the style of an artist she is imspired by. It was a challenging but rewarding experience, and the images we created together were amazing!

Another highlight of the year was my work as a photography teacher. I had the opportunity to teach a variety of classes, from beginner photography courses to more advanced workshops on specialized topics. I loved sharing my knowledge and passion for photography with my students, and it was gratifying to see them grow and improve as photographers.

One student sold his work along side me in a Belfast gallery! Another got her work featured in the Ulster museum. Many more started a life long passion for photography themselves and while individual students do amazing things it is this I am most proud of: hundreds of people found a love for photography thanks to me in 2022!

In addition to my work as an artist and teacher, I also took on a new challenge this year: learning how to code. I've always been interested in the intersection of art and technology, and I decided to take the plunge and learn how to code. It was a steep learning curve, but I was able to pick up the basics and have even nearly completed a secret project that I will share in 2023.

What am I working on related to coding?

Finally, I was thrilled to have the opportunity to sell my art in a Belfast-based art gallery. Yes I take photos of people as my day job as a personal and professional portrait photographer but I have been an artist all my life too. Being an artist first is what makes me Northern Ireland’s best Portrait photographer (warning I dont think there are any other strictly portrait photographers in NI, prove me wrong)

I don’t talk about it because it confuses my photography clients but I will be starting to do this more in 2023! It is very interrelated to my secret coding project! It was a dream come true to see my work hanging alongside the work of other talented artists, and I was grateful for the opportunity to share my vision with a broader audience.

Overall, 2022 was a fantastic year for me as a professional artist, photographer and photography teacher. I could work on exciting projects, share my knowledge with others, and see my art appreciated in a gallery setting. I'm looking forward to seeing what the future holds, and I'm excited to continue creating and sharing my work with others.

New Years Resolutions 2023

It's a new year! How many of us set a goal last night to start today? These resolutions often involve goals such as losing weight, quitting smoking, or saving money. While the start of a new year can be a great time to set goals and make positive changes in our lives, it's important to recognize that many of these resolutions are abandoned relatively quickly.

According to research, the most popular New Year's resolutions tend to be related to health and wellness, such as exercising more and eating healthier. However, these resolutions can also be some of the hardest to stick to. It's easy to get motivated at the start of the year, but maintaining that motivation over the year can be a challenge.

In fact, studies show that less than 10% of people who make New Year's resolutions achieve them. This means that the vast majority of people who set goals at the start of the year-end up abandoning them within a few months.

So, what can we do to increase the chances of success for our New Year's resolutions? One key is to be realistic about what we can accomplish. Setting unrealistic goals can lead to frustration and disappointment, which can ultimately lead to giving up. It's better to set smaller, achievable goals that we can build on over time.

Another important factor is to have a plan in place for how we will achieve our goals. This might involve finding a support system, such as a workout buddy or a financial planner, or setting specific milestones to track our progress. So it is a good idea to sign up for a class because the structure over many weeks can really help, also working towards something together in a group will create a little bit of peer pressure to be successful.

Finally, it's important to be kind to ourselves and not get too discouraged if we don't meet our goals right away. Making positive changes in our lives takes time and effort, and it's normal to have setbacks along the way. The key is to keep trying and staying focused on our long-term goals. With my photography classes, the first thing I teach is that Photography is hard! It takes time and energy to learn, however, if you sign up I have got your back! If you turn up, do the homework and stay positive you WILL be able to shoot in manual mode by the end of the beginner photography class. With the improvers class, funnily enough, you will improve! Those are promises I am happy to give and I even offer a 100% satisfaction guarantee because I am that confident!

learn all about the exposure triangle and have a strong foundation in your photography to use with ANY camera!

In conclusion, while New Year's resolutions can be a great way to set goals and make positive changes in our lives, it's important to be realistic and to have a plan in place for how we will achieve them. With the right approach, we can increase our chances of success and make lasting positive changes in the new year. Whatever you decided last night take the time today to make a real effort to find structured support! Be part of the small per cent that succeed at their resolutions!

Last minute Christmas Present Buying Guide: go Digital

As the holiday season approaches, many of us are scrambling to find the perfect gifts for our loved ones. While it's always best to plan ahead and give yourself plenty of time to shop, sometimes life gets in the way and we find ourselves running short on time. If you're in need of some last-minute digital gift ideas, here are my top five picks:

  1. A subscription to a streaming service: Whether it's Netflix, Disney plus, or something more niche like a cooking or workout app, a streaming service subscription is a gift that keeps on giving all year long. Plus, most of these services offer free trials, so you can give the gift of entertainment without breaking the bank.

  2. A digital gift card: If you're really running out of time, a digital gift card is a quick and easy option that allows the recipient to choose their own gift. You can find digital gift cards for just about any retailer or service, so you're sure to find something that fits their interests Petrol stations all sell these, just ask at the till!

  3. A virtual class or training session: With many teaching venues being closed due to recent events, virtual class options have become more popular than ever. Consider gifting a virtual class or training session to help your loved one stay learn and develop from the comfort of their own home. (nudge, nudge wink, wink, my January 2023 Classes are up now)

  4. An online language course: Learning a new language is a great way to keep the mind sharp and open up new opportunities, and there are plenty of online courses available to help make it happen. Whether your recipient is a beginner or an experienced language learner, there's an option out there for them.

  5. A digital book or audiobook: For the reader in your life, a digital book or audiobook is a thoughtful and convenient gift. You can choose from a wide selection of bestsellers, classic literature, or specialized non-fiction, and the recipient can access their gift from any device with an internet connection.

No matter which digital gift you choose, the most important thing is to show your loved ones that you're thinking of them and that you care. Happy holidays!

Why Photography Classes are so Important

As a professional photographer, I can attest to the fact that taking photography classes can make all the difference in your skills and success in the industry. Even though I am a pro, I still take the opportunity to learn new things on a regular basis! Whether you're just starting out or have been in the field for a while, there is always more to learn and ways to improve. Here are just a few reasons why photography classes are so important:

  1. Techniques and equipment: The technical aspects of photography can be overwhelming, especially for those new to the field. Photography classes can teach you everything from how to use your camera's manual settings to understanding different lenses and lighting techniques. By learning these skills, you'll be able to take more control over your shots and create the images you envision.

  2. Creative development: Photography is an art form, and like any art, it requires practice and development to improve. Photography classes can help you explore your creative side and discover new ways to tell stories through your images. They can also provide inspiration and guidance on how to push your creative boundaries and take your work to the next level.

  3. Professional development: If you're interested in turning your passion for photography into a career, taking classes can be a great way to get your foot in the door. Many professional photographers have completed some form of education or training, and having a strong portfolio and understanding of the industry can make you more competitive in the job market. Photography classes can also help you build your network and make connections within the industry.

  4. Personal growth: Photography is more than just a hobby for many people. It's a way to express themselves and capture moments in time. Photography classes can help you develop your own unique style and vision, and give you the skills to turn your passion into a lifelong pursuit.

In conclusion, photography classes can benefit photographers at all levels, from beginners looking to learn the basics to experienced professionals looking to improve their skills and expand their creative horizons. Whether you're interested in turning photography into a career or simply want to capture better images for personal enjoyment, taking classes can help you grow as a photographer and achieve your goals.

Photography is a skill you need to learn. Why not take a class with Northern Ireland's top photography teacher?

Testing an old manual focus lens today, also "learning" it. What does that mean, well like most other professions it's the skills that count not the gear so I'm building up my experience with the lens ( and having quality time with my wife and dog 😍). No point in buying stuff without investing in the skills to use it. For example, even though this is a cheap F4 lens with correct use it can make amazing #bokeh! Just check out the subject separation! Cough Cough zoom beginners photography classes are available starting soon 😅 just get in touch #photographytip #photographyteacher #photographyclasses

Beginners Photography class Testimonial

Steven came to me as a beginner photographer at my beginner’s photography zoom class and is now well on his way to becoming a very accomplished photographer! Why did he do so well so quickly? He put the time in, and asked me to guide him in classes. He asked lots of questions, and made lots of mistakes! Other than attending a class this is the best way to learn! #photography #photographyteacher #photoclass #beginnerphotography #beginnersphotographyclass #mathieudecodtsphotography #photographyclass

“I cannot recommend mathieu photography courses highly enough, in the space of a few weeks he provided me with the tools to go and express myself with photography, making the complicated achievable with his relaxed and approachable way of teaching. Mathieu is always accessible, always approachable and has learnt me a great deal in a short space of time, for which I will always be grateful...a great teacher and a top bloke👍👍👍 “

Good light Magazine

It is lovely to get some recognition in print again! I'm mostly known for my beginner's photography class but I actually teach all levels of photography, including private lessons to professional photographers on location in their own studios. This tutorial article is about the very complex properties of light, but as always I make it fun and simple to understand. I don't know anyone else that explains the inverse square law of light by using the temperature here on Earth vs on Mercury!

Beaten to the front cover again!

Abstract Nude Bodyscapes

If you want to learn more about the complexities of off-camera lighting give me a shout, I am happy to travel to your studio for private lessons. I have even helped YouTubers set up their studio on occasion, as the same rules generally apply.
