Portrait Photographer tip: Studio anywhere

So the exposure triangle, the foundation of what I teach my beginner students. It is a simple way to explain the camera basics. What happens when you try to introduce the most important photography kit of all into the equation, namely lights? Well, the triangle no longer properly applies, and the exposure triangle becomes a square! A lot of photographers get completely lost when external lights are introduced because they change the rules they need to apply. When you introduce lights under your control you need to think about the strength or power of the lights and the ambient lighting in the scene you are in.

Here is a cool lighting example I like to teach first because it looks like magic to the uninitiated. These two pictures are taken seconds apart, thanks to Paul for modelling!

The only thing different in both pictures is the shutter speed and the flash power, let me explain how to do this as best I can here, though this is definitely best learned in practice instead! In picture one, I set my lens aperture ISO and shutter speed to get a decent exposure on the backdrop before I even turned on my flash. Once I had my backdrop the way I wanted it I then turned on the flash (inside an octobox to the side) and allowed the TTL (through the lens) connected to the camera to set the power. Note that this can be done with a manual flash too, it just requires more tinkering with the flash power initially. So I manually chose the exposure for the backdrop and the flash automatically balanced the flash on Paul's face to get a good exposure.

In picture two I estimated how bright the scene was turned, off the flash and set my shutter much higher, too high in fact. I was trying to "mess up" the exposure on purpose. This only really works in manual mode because in any other mode the camera will try to "fix" your mistake, namely too dark an exposure. Remember you are in charge of your pictures, I teach students how to use manual mode if they wish because a lot of cool photography techniques are not possible without using it. At the "too high shutter speed" the background ambient lighting was not strong enough or I was too far away for it to be strong enough to be captured by the camera. However, the flash isn’t actually affected by the shutter speed. The flash duration or pop is so fast that the only thing that affects its exposure is the aperture. So even though I left controlling the flash power to the TTL connection it likely didn’t change at all.

The result is that the background ambient exposure is wrong, in this case completely black but the exposure on the subject’s face, provided by the flash is perfect, the TTL connection sees to that. This gives the apparent look of a black studio background! Looks like magic right, well if you are new to flash it is but if you are experienced you will realise this is just one of the many cool effects you can achieve with a solid understanding of off-camera lighting.

This example was taken in a dirty mechanics garage, see the dirty wall at the bottom? the whole wall was like this but it is overexposed by the second flash pointed at the dirty white wall so looks clean white. That is a story for another time, get one flash mastered first before you even think about introducing another one! Need help with this stuff? Get in touch.

International Dog day tip

Hey folks, happy International Dog day! It took me until my 40's to become a dog lover, but better late than never! Even while I am working at my PC right now our Labrador Finn is sitting behind me on the floor. Not sure if he is guarding me or just likes hanging out?

Do you have a dog? Share a picture in the comments! If you want to get better dog pictures, get down low to the ground and look up at them, as with this second shot of Finn.

Quick photo tip for Glassware

A quick tip from a shoot I was doing yesterday. If you are working with glassware in product photography get some cotton gloves and wear them when handling the glass. It will save you a lot of corrections on the computer in post-processing afterwards! #mathieudecodtsphotography

I was out shooting all day doing an awesome photoshoot recently and straight to teaching on zoom when I got home a busy but amazing day! One thing to note though, I used my emergency kit! I think I will start showing and teaching more about Behind the scenes stuff that is essential as a pro photographer, not as exciting or sexy as you might think! yesterdays setup, any questions just ask! #mathieudecodtsphotography

Abstract Headshot for Abstract Artist

As promised here is the lovely #bokeh headshot with the amazing local artist Arlene Marks. I knew we had something special while planning to shoot this! It took a long time because of the complexities of the concept. Arlene was awesome through a long photography session mostly sitting in the dark with bright lights in her face, a little like an interrogations scene in a movie! It was 100% worth it though. What we ended up with is a unique headshot that shows Arlene's character. It also creates a little curiosity about her business and is very visually interesting, just like her work! It is unique to her and her work. I don't do cookie-cutter solutions, every client is unique and special. It is why my portfolio is so bonkers, everyone is different and requires different photography! #mathieudecodtsphotography

Actor's Headshots: guess the show?

Another actor's portfolio set with Oonagh O'Flaherty. Which TV show is this then? When getting actors headshots if you're going for a specific role try and incorporate it into the pictures! So how well did we do? We aimed for a recent popular show, what was it? Answers below! #mathieudecodtsphotography

BTS Actor's Head shots

More Behind the scenes from my recent shoot with the talented Oonagh O'flaherty. I want you to see how we had a lot of fun on our shoot before I show the "serious" results. Oonagh is wanting to land some acting roles in serious TV and movies so we aimed for that in her actor portfolio images. Remember how smiley and fun she is here for when you see the next pictures! #mathieudecodtsphotography

#WednesdayWisdom portrait edit

Today the how and why for a studio portrait from before all the madness started. As before, the why of the things I am doing is what I am trying to teach. You might not agree, that is ok, you just need your own why! The more your practice and develop your own style the more sure you will be of what you want and the more you will be confident of your why. In this case the client and I worked this out in advance. Then he trusted me to do my thing because he liked my photography style. #mathieudecodtsphotography

Live Edit Sheep and Lamb

Something a little different this #wednesdaywisdom. Here is a little lesson about editing. I don't want to teach how I do things or what program I use. The "Why" is the most important part. So to attempt to teach this I edited this while narrating what I was doing and talking about why I was doing it. You can learn techniques and things that others do to their pictures but if you don't have your own "why" then you won't learn anything. You can learn the techniques anywhere, the hard part is trusting your gut and having the intent, to begin with. I hope by sharing my reasons why I am doing these things I can help you consider your own choices in your photography and your editing. #mathieudecodtsphotography

Mans best Friend

So for #SecretSunday this time I want to talk about our newest addition to the family because today is #NationalPetDay. This is Finn, we rehomed him 6 months ago and he's three years old. He was abandoned as a pup and has had a troubled relationship with humans! I too had a troubled relationship with dogs. I never wanted a dog despite my families pleas to get one. As a child, I was attacked by a dog and so had a strong fear of them all! However just as Finn is learning that not all humans are bad with us, I am learning the same of dogs with him! He has become a part of our family and is flourishing with lots of walks and cuddles.

My family have been asking to get a dog for ages, but I am not sure I would have agreed if it wasn't for lockdown, so for that bringing us together I am thankful. #mathieudecodtsphotography

Belfast photography classes

Still time to join up for tonight's beginner's photography class! If you have struggled with the camera manual you might think it's your fault, but it is not! Camera manuals are rubbish! Here this one only has the little bit poking out in English, the rest is useless. Regardless of the language though it is useless! Camera manuals don't teach photography, at least not any more Find a good teacher to learn with or a proper photography book instead. Happy to help either way. #mathieudecodtsphotography

Black and White Abstract Wall Art now available, shop local!

So I talked a little about my artwork in my youth before. I was always a big fan of the abstract and the surreal. I was also really interested in reflections and installation art.

My love of the abstract carried on into my photography and when I get the chance I like to make abstract art with my photographs. This might seem weird, I mean how can photography be abstract?

Part of my fascination with this is that making abstract photographs is a challenge. I have always had an eye for the abstract. I see things differently than most folks, I think it is because of my inability to see properly for all of my childhood, only getting glasses when I became a teenager taught me to look for patterns shapes before looking for detail because for me there was none.

Anyway I mention it today because I also do abstract photography, it is a very niché thing but some of my work is available to buy now at the Puffin Gallery Ballycastle! Lots of other great local artist's work there too, please support local, both the gallery and us artists!

#MeetTheArtist2021 : Ambidextrous

First of a new series, I'm sharing a little about me! My earliest memory of being Ambidextrous is being asked in Primary one in school (age 4) which hand I preferred writing with.  My answer was neither! I hated writing, I had a lot of trouble holding a pencil and it didn't matter which hand it was, both were uncomfortable! Apparently, I was “better” with my right hand so it was decided for me that that was the hand to write with.  So what does it mean to be Ambidextrous?  Well in simple terms when I am doing something tiring on my hands or arms I can just swap hands and get twice as much done, I can rest each hand in turn and continue working.  This might seem a little thing but it made me very productive when making things. Difficult dexterous tasks like sculpting with clay could be done continuously without a break.  In later life, it made me ten times more productive than most of my colleagues in the civil service.  Why? Because everything I did was on a keyboard and I was able to type ten times faster than anyone else in my office! In a 13 year career, I only met two people who could type faster than me (Hi Donna and Joan!).

In more complex terms I think my ambidextrousness isn't limited to my hand preference.  I mention it at the start of every beginner's class because I firmly believe that students' brains determine how they learn best.  Some students prefer reading, hearing and watching, others prefer investigating,  doing and asking.  Neither is better, it is just different learning styles for different people. I like all learning methods, and I provide sources for everyone regardless of preference. A lot of this can be down to if someone is more creative or analytical minded, left or right-brained. Are you left or right-handed? Are you from the 1 in 10 that are left-handed, the 1 in 100 who are ambidextrous or the 9 out of 10 right-handed? Let me know in the comments!
